Abstract
|
|
|
Nocardiosis is localized or disseminated infection caused by soil-borne aerobic actinomycete. With rare exception, nocarniosis is acquired by inhalation of the organism with predominantly hematogenous dissemination. Nocardiosis was initially
thought to
be rare but more recently, a survey estimated that 500 to 1000 new cases per year occur in the United States. Disorders associated with cellular immune dysfunction are the major risk factors for nocardiosis. Renal transplant receipients have been
identified in many series as especially susceptible Nocardia infection. Intensive immunosuppressive therapy, as well as uremia resulting from impaired graft function, both contribute to suppression of cellular immune function and increase the
risk
of
infection.
